Stazzona Church Square
In an urban context, paving is not merely a walking surface, but an integral part of the architectural and landscape design. The material and formal quality of a surface contributes significantly to the perception of public space, especially in contexts of particular historical and environmental value.
This is the case for the intervention carried out in the village of Stazzona (CO), overlooking Lake Como, where the redevelopment of the San Giuliano Church square and the panoramic area involved replacing the existing porphyry block paving with a continuous surface in Mosaico Drenante.
The design objective was to redefine the boundaries between the square, the adjacent road, and the viewpoint, creating visual and functional continuity up to the panoramic balcony. The new paving, suitable for both pedestrian and vehicle use, helps unify the different levels and sides of the urban space, providing a broader and more harmonious perception of the area.
Mosaico Drenante was laid on an asphalt base, with a thickness of 15 mm, using a mixture of Giallo Siena and Breccia Aurora aggregates, with a grain size of 6 mm.
The surface was further enhanced by the insertion of 315 square elements measuring 15×15 cm in Grigio Bardiglio (grain size 1–2 mm), arranged according to a geometric pattern defined by the designer. This detail creates a chromatic dialogue with the church’s interior flooring, accompanying movement within the square and strengthening the link between sacred and public space.
From a functional standpoint, the paving ensures weather resistance, drainage capacity, and low maintenance requirements, remaining consistent with the needs of a panoramic urban space subject to daily use and climatic variations.
The intervention thus contributed to enhancing the architectural and landscape identity of the site, integrating material quality, urban design, and perceptual continuity into a single system.
