Piazza 40 Martiri
Urban regeneration of a symbolic city landmark
Piazza 40 Martiri is one of the most representative access points to Gubbio: a space for social interaction, commerce, and daily mobility, serving as a link between the historic center and the contemporary urban fabric.
Prior to the intervention, part of the paving was worn and underperforming in terms of drainage, making it necessary to upgrade to current standards of functionality, safety, and long-term durability.
The redevelopment involved the adoption of an integrated HiSkin System, consisting of:
- HiSkin Drain: structural permeable concrete as base layer
- Mosaico Drenante: continuous finish over large surface area
In an extensive, high-traffic urban setting, this configuration enabled coordinated intervention on both structure and surface, improving pedestrian and vehicular accessibility, reducing water pooling, and ensuring reliability under variable loads.
The square can now accommodate events, daily foot traffic, and commercial activities while maintaining visual order, stability, and effective stormwater management, without compromising the historic character of the space.

Application Context
Large-scale multifunctional urban surface
Primary Project Objectives
- Integration of historic character with contemporary performance
Benefits Achieved
- Elimination of surface water pooling
- Continuous and safe surface
- Greater reliability compared to traditional paving
- Formal uniformity across large urban scale
The adoption of the HiSkin System enabled the design of the square as a unified system, in which the structural base and finish work in a coordinated and complementary manner.
An approach that ensures technical control, urban quality, and management sustainability for a public work of historic and dimensional significance.
